I want to start this off by saying that somewhere along the way, we messed this recipe up! Our beignets -- while Mickey shaped -- missed the mark of being a fluffy and light New Orleans pastry. But I still felt that the process was worth sharing because 1) it is a Disney official recipe and yours may turn out better, and 2) we had a lot of fun baking together.
Dan and I have talked about making beignets a lot over the last few months and we finally decided to try them out one Saturday recently. We went to Harris Teeter and got all the supplies we needed, though surprisingly we had most of the things on the list already! Below I've shared a list of ingredients you'll need to get started, but be sure to check out the FULL recipe with instructions on the Disney Parks Blog -- linked HERE.
1/2 teaspoon dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (105°)
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup heavy cream
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup boiling water
Vegetable oil for frying
Overall, I think our yeast didn't activate correctly, as our dough didn't seem to rise. While tasty still, they turned out a little bit dense! But while our baking skills may have earned a C+, our date-day in the kitchen will certainly be memorable!
